In the early 1830s, ‘follow up’ caps replaced top hats as a more practical form of sporting headwear for the senior boys of Rugby School to wear during rugby football matches. During Queen Adelaide’s 1839 visit to Rugby, the annual School house vs the school match was held, with the former resplendent in their fine crimson headwear, marking the first time a team had worn a uniform for football.
